Comodore's Comments - July 2021
It only takes a couple of 90 degree days in early June to prove that the summer of 2021 has arrived. The transition from late winter to instant summer seemed particularly abrupt this year. A quick survey of our storage yard up river proves how flexible boaters can be since only a few boats remain to be launched. At the same time, club slips at the lake front are nearly full, demonstrating the boating season is in full swing. Lake water level is down significantly, and hopefully this will mean less damage to docks and waterfront.

Careful observation detects several members with new boats, and a few boats in the harbor belonging to new club members. Good Luck to all for a safe boating season. I am looking forward to our  “Open Boat Night” and the opportunity to get a close look at the new additions to the fleet. Open Boat Night is a fun chance to get to know members on a new level and talk about hopes and plans for cruising and exploration of new areas around the lake.

A very welcome trend to observe is the spring surge in new club members. Membership in both apprentice and associate categories is showing a rapid increase. The club welcomed three new members at the June meeting, will induct six members at the July membership meeting, and looks like the Board will interview another five potential members at the July board meeting. Great food, friendly and fun atmosphere, and reduced cost of boat ownership are some of the reasons I hear for joining.

By far the most frequent sentiment I hear for joining our club is the general feeling of a safe environment to eat, drink, and socialize. We have been very deliberate and worked very hard at creating the atmosphere of safety. Credit for this reputation of safety goes to members and staff alike. You are also talking about it as well, since that is how new members are hearing about it. Keep up the good work, keep talking about our great club, and please sponsor a new member.

I am pleased to report several members have made a specific point of commenting how nice the club’s property is looking. Grass and hedges are looking good despite construction and last years waterfront repairs. New planters and flowers are on the new deck, and new planters and flowers surround the flag pole. Deb Erickson chairs our Grounds committee, and several new members have helped make an immediate impact for the cause. Contact Deb if you would like to join this rapidly growing group.

Be safe and stay healthy everyone. Have a safe July 4th holiday,

Commodore Tom
