February was a little quieter than usual for the yacht club this year. We had an excellent turnout for the Super Bowl party, and we hosted two SEAS winter education series presentations by Peter “Bear” Reichelsdorfer and Steve Radovan. I was unfortunately unable to attend but I heard they were fantastic events.
The Mid-Winter Brat fry returns on Sunday March 13, featuring Nashville-based country band Dallas Ugly, followed by the Sea Scouts Chili Cookoff on March 27 – please mark your calendars for both of these great events. It was two years ago on St. Patrick’s Day that we had to close our club due to the onset of the COVID pandemic. This year we will be open and there will be a little extra luck for one member. We will be selling 50/50 raffle tickets starting on the first with the drawing on St. Patrick’s Day. Make sure you are there for the drawing to get something extra.
Although our basin is still frozen, and we are a couple of months away from our sailing season, we did have two members competing in the RORC Caribbean 600. This is a 600-mile race that starts and finishes in Antigua with a lap around 11 different islands along the way. Steve and Tony Orlebeke crewed on Callisto, a Pac 52, and were among over 700 sailors from 74 teams represented by 32 countries. Callisto and finished 3rd in class and 5th overall. When you see them around the club make sure congratulate them, and I am sure they will have some stories to tell.
Finally, I am happy to announce that we hired a new office manager. Faye Bruyette comes to us after 42 years working for McDonalds in every role from cashier to district manager before retiring last summer. Faye and her husband Steve also own Al and Al’s Steinhaus. Kori is working with Faye on the transition and things are moving ahead smoothly. Please continue to use our website to see your up-to-date bill while Faye gets up to speed in her new role. Also please thank Kori for the years of service and we look forward to seeing her and Eric around the club.
We have a lot of fun events coming up, and I hope to see you down at the club.
Fair Winds,
Commodore Jason
